We've enjoyed having folks in the studio over the past few autumns to carve (stoneware) pumpkins with us! This year, we're going to try letting you pick up a fresh, read-to-carve pumpkin, take it home with some instructions on how to carve it using common household tools, and bring it back for glazing and firing. You'll have your choice of four colors for your jack-o-latern. After firing, they'll be somewhere in the range of 8-9 inches tall.
Colors: Pumpkin Orange, Ghostly White, Spooky Blue, and Swamp Monster Green
If you drop it back off to us by 10/16/2020 at the latest, we'll promise to have it back to you by 10/24. Those that we receive earlier may be ready to pick up earlier as well.

How this will work
- Purchase your desired number of pumpkins online, below. (Studio members receive a discount automatically if logged in.)
- We'll email you to schedule a pick-up time. We need at least 48 hours notice before pick-up to "grow" you a fresh stoneware pumpkin.
- You'll come by the studio, wearing a facial covering, to pick up your pumpkin and to get a few quick instructions on tips for carving it.
- You'll receive a smooth, hollow pumpkin form with with the top-to-bottom pumpkin lines carved in, and a stem. You'll be responsible for the face or other design.
- You'll take it home and should be able to carve it using household tools.
- You'll let us know when you're bringing it back so we can meet you for drop-off, at which point you'll tell us what color to make it!
- All pumpkins received by 10/16/2020 will be ready for pick-up by 10/24/2020. Those received earlier may be ready for pickup earlier as well.
- We have done this activity in the studio for a few years now, and we feel comfortable saying that it's similar in difficulty to carving a regular, garden-grown pumpkin. The tool are actually pretty similar (something like a paring knife works well). It's a similar process: plan your design in advance. Don't leave any pieces that are too skinny or they may crack or collapse.
- Unfortunately, we cannot replace pumpkins that don't go according to plan or which are broken or which are allowed to dry out before carving. They're time-consuming to throw on the wheel. We think that if you take reasonable care, though, you'll do just fine.
- Is there anything special to this? It's important to plan to carve it pretty soon after pick-up, ideally within 24 hours. You need to keep it moist, or the clay might get too hard to carve easily. We'll provide it to you well-wrapped in plastic, and you should keep it that way until you're ready to carve it. Additionally, you have to be careful not to leave any pointy edges that might become sharp after firing. Young children should be supervised during carving with sharp tools. We'll provide additional tips at pick-up.
